The Heritage and Research Center preserves and advances the shared history, mission, and legacy of women religious and their sponsored ministries. Below is an overview of our founding and impact.
How Did It Begin?
Recognizing that many Congregations were nearing completion due to declining vocations in the United States, several Midwest congregations began exploring collaborative preservation efforts. In April 2018, the Sisters of the Holy Cross convened a Day of Dreaming at their motherhouse in Notre Dame, Indiana. Representatives from several congregations attended, sparking ongoing discussions that ultimately led to the creation of HARC. Through shared vision and collective action, these communities ensured that their histories, ministries, and stories would be preserved with care and professionalism.
Impact
Catholic sisters in the United States have transformed communities through their leadership and service. They founded hospitals, clinics, schools, colleges, food pantries, shelters, and outreach ministries that continue to shape social, spiritual, and educational life. Their impact is felt by millions, particularly among immigrants, marginalized communities, and those in need of care. HARC shines a light on this legacy by making their archives accessible for research, scholarship, and public understanding.
