Sister Sharon Rae McCarthy celebrated 50 years of religious profession this year. She was born in Detroit Lakes, Minn., on April 22, 1941. She entered the Servants of Mary on August 15, 1967, and made her first profession of vows on August 16, 1968. She holds a bachelors in education from Saint Cloud State University and a certificate as a spiritual guide from the Franciscan Spirituality Center in La Crosse. Her ministries include serving as an elementary school teacher in Minnesota and Wisconsin
Sister Marguerite Samz was born in Argonne, Wis., on March 9, 1937. She is the fourth of 23 children, all from the same set of parents. She attended Three Lakes Elementary School, Argonne Elementary School, and Crandon High School. She entered the Servants of Mary in 1960 and professed first vows in 1962. She earned a bachelors degree from Viterbo College, La Crosse, Wis., and a masters from the University of Saint Thomas, Saint, Paul, Minn. She completed one unit of clinical pastoral education at Alexian Brothers Medical Center, Elk Grove Village, Ill. She ministered as an elementary and high school teacher in California and Wisconsin. She was a counselor, teacher, and registrar at Mount Senario College, Ladysmith. She served two terms on the Servants of Mary Leadership Team, first as vice president of ministry and then as vice president of formation. She served as coordinator of the Servite Sisters at the motherhouse in Ladysmith and at Addolorata Villa in Wheeling, Ill. She was on the pastoral care staff at Bethany Riverside Lutheran Nursing Home, La Crosse, Wis.
Helen Prejean, CSJ (pronounced pray-ZHAHN), was born on April 21, 1939. She is an American Catholic religious sister and a prominent advocate for the abolition of the death penalty.
Prejean is best known for her best-selling book, *Dead Man Walking* (1993), which is based on her experiences as a spiritual advisor to two convicts on death row before their executions. In her book, she examines the effects of the death penalty on all individuals involved in the process. The book was adapted into a 1995 film of the same name, featuring Susan Sarandon as Prejean and Sean Penn
Pimentel entered the Missionaries of Jesus in 1978, defying her familys wishes, and earned a master's degree in theology from Saint Mary's University and a second master's in counseling from Loyola University Chicago. She began her work with refugees in 1980 at Casa Oscar Romero and became executive director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley in 2004, providing essential services to migrants entering the U.S.
Throughout her career, she has been featured in various media outlets and has continued to paint, often donating her artwork to fundraisers. Notably, one painting was gifted to Pope Francis during his 2015 visit to the U.S.
Pimentel received the Laetare Medal from the University of Notre Dame in March 2018 and the Hispanic Heritage Award for Service later that year. In 2020, she was named one of Time's 100 most influential people for her humanitarian work. In 2023, she was one of the first recipients of the Civic Renewal Award for her advocacy for marginalized communities and has established a strong partnership with Bishop Daniel E. Flores.
Sister Patricia Ann Pat Ferguson, OSM, 86, of the Servants of Mary, Ladysmith, died peacefully at Addolorata Villa, Wheeling, Ill., on Friday, Dec. 18, 2020.
Sister Pat was born in Kenosha, on Nov. 6, 1934, to Londus and Jessie (Larsen) Ferguson. She entered the Servants of Mary in 1955 and made her first profession of vows in 1957. She was known for a time as Sister Mary Eugene.
She held an LPN certificate from Saint Marys School of Practical Nursing, LaSalle, Ill.
Sister Mary Zita Vogel, OSM, 80, of the Servants of Mary, Ladysmith, passed away on March 17, 2004, at Holy Family Hospital in Des Plaines, Ill. She was born on June 23, 1923, in Hillsview, S.D., to John and Elizabeth Ettel Vogel.
Sister entered the Servants of Mary Convent on September 4, 1944, and professed vows on August 15, 1946. Despite limited formal training, she earned a high school diploma from Our Lady of Sorrows High School and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Saint Norbert's College.
She dedicated many years to teaching in various communities, including Weirton, W. Va., and Saint Paul, Minn. In retirement, she volunteered at Addolorata Villa, supporting elderly residents.
Sister Mary Zita is survived by three sisters, two brothers, numerous nieces and nephews, and her community. She was preceded in death by her parents, several siblings, and a brother.
Sister Virginia Schwartz, aged 83, participated in a Lions Club eye mission to Nicaragua and served as a parish director at Saint Ann's Catholic Church Cable. Sister Virginia Schwartz is pictured with new Secular Servite members. Sister Virginia Schwartz enjoys fruit picking with Sister Dominica, including strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, apples, and cherries in Bayfield.
Sister Mary Veronica Davison, aged 96, is the oldest living member and has celebrated her 79th jubilee. She holds a doctorate in music history from the University of Minnesota.
Sister Bonnie Alho, born on February 6, 1942, in Superior, WI, was the eldest of two children to Jack and Agnes (Osman) Alho. She joined the Servants of Mary in 1958 and became a novice in 1960, taking the name Sister Mary Thaddeus. She professed her first vows in 1948 and final vows in 1954. Sister Bonnie earned a bachelor's degree from Mount Senario College, a master's in religious education from Saint Thomas University in Houston, and a certificate in clinical pastoral education from Saint Francis Hospital in La Crosse. She taught grades 1-5 for 11 years and served on the Diocese of Superior Religious Education Department staff for another 11 years. She was the director of religious education at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Ladysmith for 10 years and a pastoral associate at Saint Joseph Parish in Rice Lake for 13 years. Sister Bonnie also served on the Diocesan Deacon Board and the Superior Mutual Ministry Team, and she helped establish programs such as Marriage Encounter, Teens Encounter Christ, Fiat, and QueSaint An avid Green Bay Packers fan, she passed away on January 28, 2017, at the age of 74 at Dove Healthcare in Rice Lake, WI, due to liver cancer. She is survived by her brother Gregg, nephew Kieran, and niece Tammie.
