At 20, she moved to Chicago, worked as a maid, met Servite Father Clarence Brissette, and joined the Servite Third Order. She met Mother Mary Alphonse Bradley, who invited her to Ladysmith. Sarah entered the Servants of Mary on Aug. 9, 1942, became a novice on Aug. 14, 1943, and took her vows in 1944 and 1950. Her early days in religious life made her humor shine, joking about the silence. Her first assignment was teaching at Saint Paul School in Weirton, W.Va., then in Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Wisconsin. She was academic dean at Mount Senario College. She served as principal of Saint Domitilla School for 20 years, then assistant principal and principal at Saint Eulalia School. She earned degrees from DePaul University and Duquesne University. In 2007, she moved to Addolorata Villa, where she died in 2010 at age 88 from Alzheimer's. Father Heskin, an Irish priest and childhood acquaintance, officiated her funeral.tery in Ladysmith.

Sister Mary Dominca Effertz was born on March 3, 1929, in Saint Cloud, Minnesota. She entered the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict in 1947 and made her final monastic profession in 1952. Sister Mary Dominca earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the College of Saint Benedict and a Master of Arts degree in education from the University of Minnesota. She dedicated her life to teaching, serving in various schools in Minnesota, including Saint Joseph Lab School, Saint Boniface, and Saint Augustine. Sister Mary Dominca also served as a principal and was involved in religious education programs. She retired in 1999 but continued to volunteer in various capacities. Sister Mary Dominca passed away on October 15, 2023, at the age of 94. She was born on July 7, 1917, in Park Rapids, Minnesota, to Samuel H. Wanbaugh and Emiline S. Scanlon Wanbaugh. Sister entered the Servants of Mary Convent in Ladysmith on August 28, 1939, and took her vows on August 16, 1941.
She trained as a certified teacher in Park Rapids and taught at the local country school and at Emerald. Later, she attended River Falls State Teachers College and earned a Bachelor's degree in Education from Saint Catherine's College in Saint Paul. After teaching for 16 years in parochial schools across Saint Paul, Carteret, N.J., Wenton, W.Va., Hillsdale, Illinois, and Menomonee Falls, she studied at Divine Word Center in London, Ontario. The remaining years of her life, until her health declined, were dedicated to ministering to the disadvantaged, the elderly, and the infirm at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Chicago, Saint Matthew's Parish in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and on the San Xavier Nation American Reservation to the Tohono O'odham people in Tucson, Arizona.
She retired to the Motherhouse in Ladysmith in 1995, where she continued her ministry by caring for the sick and dying at Rusk County Hospital and Nursing Home.
